Foden has been an important part of a solid return to action for Pep Guardiola’s men, and Walker has hailed the 20-year-old as the best he has seen at that age, even better than some of his former team-mates at Tottenham.

‘He is the best youngster I have ever seen,’ the City right-back told the club’s official website.

‘That is after playing at Tottenham with the likes of Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Andros Townsend, Steven Caulker, Harry Winks, who are very, very good players. Phil is leaps ahead of them for me, just because of his knowledge of the game.’

Despite playing a bit-part role in the last two seasons, Foden has been able to learn his game with some of the world’s best midfielders and a world-class manager, which Walker thinks has put him ahead of the rest.

‘I don’t know if it is because he is constantly watching David Silva and learning from him, or just his knowledge of the game’, Walker added.

‘I think if he just improves on his final ball, on assisting and his final decision making on that, I think that comes with experience. As a player and as a human being, he is top class and I wish him all the best in everything that he does because he deserves it all.’

Foden’s best season yet includes seven goals and nine assists in 33 appearances overall, as well as a man-of-the-match display in City’s Carabao Cup Final victory over Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old is seen as the man to fill outgoing club legend David Silva’s boots

The youngster is expected to take over the reigns from Silva when the Spaniard departs in the summer, putting an end to a hugely successful tenure with the North-west club.

Walker spent eight seasons at Spurs but left to join City in 2017, where he has won six major trophies including two Premier League titles.
