PSG speak on breaking FFP rules to sign Messi

Paris Saint-Germain president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has insisted the club were able to afford the signing of Lionel Messi.

Messi was set to sign a new five-year contract with Barcelona, but talks collapsed over LaLiga’s financial limits.

It meant that the 34-year-old became a free agent and allowed PSG to make their move.Messi’s deal with the Ligue 1 club is worth £25m per year after tax and includes a £25m signing-on fee.

But Al-Khelaifi – who is also the chairman of the European Club Association – said:
We followed the financial fair play regulations from day one when we started, and until the end, we’re going to always fulfil the regulations.
“Before doing anything, we look with our commercial people, our financial people, legal people.

“So if you see that we’re signing Leo, that’s when you know we have the capacity to sign him. If not, we’re not going to sign him. We’re not going to promise something we couldn’t.”
