Former Manchester United ace Phil Neville believes Mason Greenwood has a ‘natural ruthless’ streak that sets him apart from strike partners Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
The teenager scored his 13th goal of the season in United’s resounding 3-0 win against Brighton as United kept up their pursuit of a top four place.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sold Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan for £73million last summer in order to promote Greenwood into the first team and the 18-year-old has repaid his faith with a scintillating campaign.
Greenwood was a centre forward in United’s academy but he’s been used mainly as a right winger this term, where he’s able to cut in on his favoured left-foot.
Solskjaer described Greenwood as the best finisher at the club last summer and Neville agrees, claiming that his ‘ruthless’ finishing is the biggest difference between the teenager and the likes of Martial and Rashford.
‘You know the difference between Greenwood compared to Martial and Rashford is that Greenwood is a natural, ruthless finisher,’ Neville told DAZN.
‘You see the stepovers there, he shoots between his [the defender’s] legs like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer used to do.
‘I think this kid’s got a massive future. I think he has everything.
‘ He plays a little Robin van Persie like in terms of his style. His legs are similar, the way he graces the field. His composure and finishing is as good as anything at that club.’
United’s win puts them back to within two points of Chelsea, though they’ve played a game more.
As it stands, fifth place would be enough for a Champions League place but Solskjaer will not want to risk Manchester City’s ban being overturned.
The Europa League, which is set to be held after the season finishes, is another route into the competition.
