Manchester United transfer target Jude Bellingham has agreed on terms with Borussia Dortmund over a move in the upcoming summer transfer window, but is still undecided over where he will be playing his football next season. That’s according to transfer expert Duncan Castles, who believes that Jadon Sancho could be used to influence Bellingham’s future.
Bellingham appears set to leave Birmingham City in the upcoming transfer window and could be involved in a transfer tug-of-war.
Dortmund and United both remain keen on signing the 17-year-old, who is still on a scholars’ contract at St Andrews.
Due to the amount of games played, Birmingham are able to command a hefty transfer fee – believed to be in the region of £30million.
While Dortmund has agreed on personal terms with him, it is United who has agreed on a price with Birmingham, according to Castles.
Speaking to the Transfer Window Podcast, the expert hinted that United could look to use Sancho as a makeweight in a potential deal.
United are desperate to sign the Dortmund winger but are some way off agreeing on a fee with the German side.
They will only pay £50m per player in the upcoming window, while Dortmund wants £116m, and subsequently, they are planning for ways to manoeuvre a deal into fruition.
He explained that United could opt to bow out of the race to sign Bellingham in an agreement with Dortmund which will see them drop their asking price for Sancho.
“There’s the additional factor also adding to the complication of this in that both Manchester United and Dortmund want Jude Bellingham,” he said.
“We told you in January that Manchester United had an offer of £30million, which the player rejected.
“They got to the kind of fees that Birmingham would accept.
“But Bellingham and his father have been very careful about deciding his future, they’ve had extensive talks with both clubs.
“They’ve got a salary offer from Dortmund, the information I have is that that’s been accepted by the Bellingham family.
“They’re happy with the terms there, but there’s been no final decision on where he’ll go.
“There are suggestions that Manchester United may try and take Bellingham’s future into the discussions with Dortmund and do some type of arrangement where they’ll allow Dortmund access to Bellingham and withdraw their pursuit of the player in exchange for Dortmund selling them Sancho at the correct price.
“There’s a lot of haggling, manoeuvring and unusual strategies around these players that the two clubs are interested in.”
