According to a report from German tabloid Bild (via Inside Futbol), Chelsea defender/midfielder Ethan Ampadu will not be returning to RB Leipzig this season to complete his loan stint.
Ampadu has been hindered by a back injury suffered in February, from which he is still recovering. But even before the problem, he was already struggling to find regular playing time under manager Julian Nagelsmann, despite impressing in every (rare) opportunity he had received, such as his amazing Champions League performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16.
Since Ampadu is not too keen on pushing himself while dealing with the injury, especially given how he’s failed to convince Nagelsmann (despite consistent good reviews from the head coach as well), it’s probably no surprise that he may opt not to return to the club if and when the Bundesliga resumes, perhaps as early as next month.
While he’d be ineligible to play for Chelsea until next season starts (whenever that may be), his early return to Chelsea could also give him more time to prepare for next season, when he could be in Frank Lampard’s plans for preseason and potentially (hopefully!) beyond.
