Owen Hargreaves believes Chelea’s humbling 3-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Saturday will lead to Frank Lampard making some “ruthless” decisions in the transfer market. Chelsea’s top-four hopes are out of their hands now following the shock defeat to the Blades.
Both Manchester United and Leicester have the opportunity to climb above Chelsea if they beat Southampton and Bournemouth respectively.
It would leave Chelsea outside the Champions League places with just three games remaining, which includes a visit to Anfield to face champions Liverpool.
Chelsea’s defence came in for heavy criticism as Sheffield United fired three past them, particularly the third from David McGoldrick.
Antonio Rudiger failed to clear his lines from a tame Lys Mousset cross with McGoldrick in acres of space inside the box to fire past Kepa.
The club have already looked to improve their front line ahead of next season having signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
But Hargreaves believes Lampard will now want to make some drastic changes to his defensive unit in the transfer market as well.
“I think he learned that he’s going to have a difference defence next season and potentially a different goalkeeper,” he said on Premier League Productions.
“For Frank being as young a manager as he is, he’s probably one of the best in terms of his interviews after the game.
“He’s honest. He praises but he’s also critical when he needs to be.
“That was a huge blow to him, I don’t think he saw that coming.
“Frank made it to the top because he was ruthless, he worked hard and he made decisions when he had to.
“He’s done it as a manager and I think that will show him that he needs to do something different defensively next season personnel wise.”
Left-back is a position Chelsea are seemingly keen to improve upon with both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri potentially leaving the club.
Ben Chilwell has emerged as the Blues’ top target, but Leicester are reportedly demanding £75million.
Manchester United have also emerged as possible candidates to come in and steal Chilwell away from the King Power Stadium.
Reports have also suggested that Lampard is keen to replace Kepa, with Ajax’s Andre Onana being linked as a possible replacement.
